President Weaver's First Blog Entry
Published by President Domenick Weaver in Welcome to the new website and current events • 4/8/2010
Weaver here. Today I am on vacation and writing to you from the lodge at Donner Ski Ranch. Kids are on Spring Break and just finished their first ever ski lesson and so far are doing excellent. In the mean time, there is a lot of other business going on in the world of Local 689.

With this being my first ever BLOG entry, I will catch you up briefly:

Out of contract since January 2010, (No raises since July 2007), in negotiations, suffered Station Closure and Engine Closures, suffered brownouts, have had to initiate a ballot measure to ensure the safety of the public, been sued over it, held “Town-hall meetings”, have suffered layoffs and demotions, fought to get jobs back, lost sworn office positions, fought to keep the work, had to vote “no confidence” in our Chief, and educate the community and decision makers as to why. All while still going on calls, donating our time and coin to support the community we serve. For this, the members of Local 689 are truly amazing people.

In more recent events, this past week, we entered into even new territory for Local 689. On Monday, 5 APRIL 2010, Brother Jeff DelBono was sworn in as an Executive Board Member of the Central Labor Council of Alameda County. There was a Rally and March that preceded the oath for Jeff. We had nearly 20 of our members and their families there to support him in this endeavor and workers throughout the Bay Area.

Finally, I leave you with a request. For those of you who do not know, one of our Fire Captains and Shift Vice Presidents of this Local has been diagnosed with job related stomach cancer. He is undergoing aggressive treatment and needs all the support he can get. I ask that you please keep him and his family in your thoughts and prayers as he fights this disease. There will many opportunities for assistance and donations in the near future.

Please check back on our new website periodically to see how you can help.

Thanks for reading.
